love cheese, eat cheshireA CAMPAIGN to save the future of Cheshire cheese in the face of a stark fall in production has been hitting the headlines thanks to Profile Communication.

The PR and marketing specialists launched the campaign just two weeks ago on behalf of the cheese section at this year’s Cheshire County Show and already word is spreading far and wide.

Rob Tickle, PR Executive at Profile Communication, explained: "We hope this campaign will help to put Cheshire cheese back on the map by making the public more aware of the quality cheese produced in the county and encouraging more people to try its distinctive full bodied, fresh, flavour.

"We’ve teamed up with local producers including Joseph Heler, from Nantwich, to raise the profile of Cheshire cheese in a bid to get it back on tables across the country.”

With the Guardian, Financial Times and many regional papers including the Manchester Evening News, Chester Chronicle and Macclesfield Express already picking up on the campaign, Profile have so far generated a PR value of more than £139,000 and given in excess of 659,000 people the opportunity to see what the campaign is all about.

The campaign has also received great support from the Cheshire public through Facebook and Twitter, while two prestigious hotels, Hill Valley Spa, Hotel and Golf together with Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa – part of the Macdonald Hotels & Resorts group – will be featuring Cheshire cheese inspired dishes on their menus throughout June in a bid to boost its popularity.

Pre World War II there were over 200 Cheshire cheese producers in Cheshire but changes in retail trends, the growth of cheaper mass produced pre-packaged cheeses, and an increase in other cheese varieties on the market means it is believed there is now only six local producers left.

At this year’s Cheshire Show a special display in the Roberts Bakery Food Hall will allow the public to sample Cheshire cheese made by local producers. There will also be a special category for the best Cheshire cheese in the cheese competition.
